Event Name OCTOBER 17 • ITCC IMPORT WORKSHOP SERIES: Textile and Wearing Apparel - The Demise of Quotas: What Next?
Description A defining feature of the textile trade, the yearly quest for quota, is scheduled to end January 1, 2005. Under the WTO Agreement on Textiles and Clothing, all textile and apparel quotas for WTO countries will be phased out. In the current economic atmosphere characterized by the closing of domestic factories, the negotiation of new trade agreements, and the shift of production to China, what does the phaseout mean to importers? What can members of the textile trade expect post-phaseout, how can they protect their industry, and what potential trade remedies could be made available to them? We are honored to have representatives of both the Office of the United States Trade Representative and the Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements as speakers regarding their agency responsibilities and actions, as well as an attorney familiar with the issues involved from an importer’s point of view.

Speakers:
David Spooner, Special Textiles Negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative
D. Michael Hutchinson, Office Director, Committee for the Implementation of Textile Agreements (“CITA”)
Robert A. Shapiro, Partner, Barnes, Richardson & Colburn, Washington, D.C.
